The 3-Day Albanian Alps Classic Loop
The full Accursed Mountains circuit: Komani Lake gorges, the Shala River, the Valbona Pass on foot, and the village of Theth. Three days, all arranged.
Day trip from Shkoder 42.42°N · 19.79°E
The Shala River is only reachable by boat, across Lake Komani. The water is clear and cold, the banks are forested, and there's no road in or out: just the ferry.
How the day runs
We pick you up in Shkodër in the morning and drive east on the winding mountain road up to the Koman hydro-electric dam, with views over the Drin River valley on the way.
At Koman, you board the boat. The crossing runs through narrow, flooded canyons with forested limestone cliffs on both sides, often ranked among the better boat rides in Europe.
The boat turns off the main lake into the mouth of the Shala River, where you get off. There's no road here, only the river. You have about four hours to swim in the cold, clear water, rent a kayak and paddle upstream, sit on the pebbled banks, or eat at one of the small riverside restaurants.
Kayaking, zip-lining, and lunch are run independently by local operators on-site; you'll need LEK cash for these.
You board the boat back across Lake Komani, then the van back to Shkodër, arriving in the early evening.
