Your go-to guide to the north

Why Choose a Guided Tour of the Albanian Alps?

Navigating the remote mountain roads and unmarked trails of Northern Albania can be a daunting task for even the most experienced travelers. The infrastructure is developing, but logistics—such as securing reliable 4x4 transport, booking guesthouses during the busy summer months, and arranging luggage transfers between valleys—require local expertise.

When you book with us, you get:

  • Local, English-Speaking Guides: Our guides were born and raised in these mountains. They don't just show you the path; they share the rich folklore, history, and Kanun traditions of the highland communities.
  • Seamless Logistics: We handle everything. From your pickup in Tirana or Shkoder, to ferry tickets on Komani Lake, to securing the best beds in Theth and Valbona.
  • Safety First: Weather in the Alps can change rapidly. Our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and know the trails intimately, ensuring you are safe at all times.
  • Authentic Experiences: We partner with local families to provide you with authentic, farm-to-table organic Albanian meals and genuine highland hospitality.

The Albanian Alps

Choose your destination.

Three unique destinations, each with its own character, landscapes, and experiences. Here's where you can go and what you'll see there.

The historic stone church of Theth beneath the Albanian Alps

Theth

The cultural heart

The gentlest gateway into the high Alps, paved all the way from Shkoder. Base yourself here among warm stone guesthouses: days for the Blue Eye, Grunas Waterfall and easy valley trails, evenings for home-cooked dinners under loud stars. The richest destination for history and comfort.

Jagged limestone peaks rising above the Valbona Valley

Valbona

The rugged frontier

Wilder and higher: the frontier. Limestone peaks rise straight from the valley floor and the trekking turns serious. Make Valbona your hiking base: it anchors one end of the legendary pass, with alpine meadows and remote hamlets in every direction and a solitude that's absolute.

Shala River

The Thailand of Albania

Reached only by boat across Komani Lake, the Shala's emerald water is made for swimming, kayaking and doing gloriously little. Less a hiking base than a reward: spend a day on the beaches or an overnight under the cliffs. The Alps' purest slice of calm.

    • Komani Lake & Shala River: This is where the magic begins. We arrive at Komani Lake and take a boat ride out to the crystal-clear waters of the Shala River. You'll have plenty of free time here to explore the valley, relax by the water, and take in the unbelievable scenery.
    • Ferry to Fierza: Next, we board the ferry to cruise across Lake Komani, navigating through the towering limestone gorges and untouched wilderness of the Northern Albanian Alps. Upon arriving in Fierza, our dedicated transfer bus will be waiting to take you directly to your accommodation.
    • Guesthouse in Valbona: Settle into your room for the evening in the heart of the Valbona Valley, where a freshly prepared, traditional dinner will be waiting for you.

    • Waterfall Grunas (Optional): Still have some energy left? You have the option to take a scenic 45-minute hike from the guesthouse out to the Waterfall Grunas. This is entirely optional, if you'd rather stay back, relax and wait for tonight's freshly prepared group dinner.
