Hidden deep within the rugged peaks of the Albanian Alps lies a destination so exotic and pristine that it has earned the nickname the "Thailand of Albania." The Shala River is a vibrant, azure-blue river that winds through steep limestone canyons before emptying into the massive Komani Lake. Accessible only by boat, a trip to the Shala River is a true escape from civilization.
How to Reach the Shala River
The Shala River is completely inaccessible by car. The only way to reach this hidden paradise is by taking a boat from Koman Lake. Most travelers begin early in the morning in Shkoder, take a minibus to the Koman Ferry Terminal, and board a small motorized traditional boat. The boat ride takes approximately 1 hour and offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the Balkans.
What to Do at the Shala River
- Swimming & Sunbathing: The water is incredibly clear, but be warned—it is glacial runoff and extremely cold, even in August! Most visitors take a quick plunge and spend the rest of the time sunbathing.
- Zip-lining: A small, thrilling zip-line crosses the river, offering a fantastic aerial view.
- Canoeing and Kayaking: Rent small canoes or kayaks to paddle upstream where boats cannot reach.
Can You Stay Overnight?
Yes! While most visit on a day trip, staying overnight is highly recommended for true tranquility. Once day-tripper boats leave around 3:00 PM, the river empties out. Accommodations are basic but charming rustic wooden guesthouses on the riverbanks.
