  • Visit Vermosh, the northernmost village in Albania
  • Quiet, uncrowded, different in character from Valbonë and Theth

Day by day

The itinerary.

  1. Day 01
    Shkodër → Tamarë → Selcë → Lëpushë

    Ascending the Cem River Canyon

    • Engineering marvels of the canyon road
    • Mountain pass viewpoints
    • Unhurried exploration

We leave Shkodër mid-morning and follow the paved road that winds through the Cem River Canyon (Lumi i Cemit), with limestone walls rising on both sides. We pass through the stone villages of Tamarë and Selcë, with stops to look around Kelmend. By late afternoon we reach the highland basin of Lëpushë, ringed by the Accursed Mountains. You'll stay at a family-run guesthouse, with dinner made from local ingredients: dairy, slow-roasted meat, and homemade raki.

  2. Day 02
    Lëpushë → Vermosh → Shkodër

    The Northern Frontier and Return

    • Gentle alpine walks
    • Vermosh Valley exploration
    • Afternoon descent

After breakfast, spend the morning walking the wildflower meadows around Lëpushë, or go a bit further to Vermosh, the northernmost village in Albania, in a wide valley next to the Montenegrin border. In the afternoon we drive back down through the canyon, seeing it from the other direction. We're back in Shkodër by late afternoon.

Good to know

Suitability
Good for travelers who want alpine scenery without a major trek. The focus is on the drive and the villages, not hiking.
Border Proximity
The route runs close to the Montenegrin border but stays inside Albania the whole way; a standard ID is enough for domestic checkpoints.
Booking
Needs advance booking. Early spring and late autumn departures are sometimes possible, depending on road conditions.
